Twitter May Not Be For Everyone

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

I’m afraid Twitter is not for people like me.

Before you think that this is an anti-Twitter post, let me make some things clear: I do like Twitter and the concept behind it. Besides, the site’s layout is very pleasant to the eyes, so Twitter is certainly a place I feel comfortable at. I also know how helpful Twitter can be: there you can read news, network, find interesting links etc. Basically, it does what all good social media sites should do and even has some special features that make it stand out on its own. And I could never complain about Twitter’s community; so far I haven’t spotted any problems in it. I’d really love to know how all those followers of mine have found me, since I don’t use to promote my account and I rarely follow anyone, but that’s not a problem; it’s only my curiosity.

So, what’s the matter?

Too little space to write!

Of course, that’s what microblogging is about. And I like microblogging. In fact, I used to be a fan of this type of blogging. I even used to think that I’d eventually become a great microblogger, publishing microposts on several different sites. However, time has gone by… and so has my initial excitement.

I tend to be quite prolix. I love writing long pieces. I also write shorter ones, but I don’t like to feel obliged to do it. At Twitter there’s that tiny character limit that makes me frustrated whenever I want to post something, because most times I need much more than 140 characters to convey my ideas.

Some people say that microblogging is going to change the way we blog forever because it makes blogging easier, faster and less boring to most Internet users. Well, I’m certainly not part of that supposed majority. I believe there will always be people in need of more space to express themselves. I only hope that said space won’t be taken away from us.

And now let me see if Twitter’s character limit will be enough to accommodate this post’s link…

This is my entry for Isabella’s group writing project on Twitter.

Are you ready to change this blog's purpose again?

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

You bet I am. More changes are coming (see my tagline).

There are many things still to be prepared, but I’ve fixed some others and… well, I’m working all the time in order to get things done as fast as possible. I’ve been playing with many of the possibilities offered by WordPress’ dashboard to see if I come up with even more ideas.

By the way, instead of writing this post I should go back to my playground. See you later!

When will you get a new WordPress theme for this blog?

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

I don’t know. I should have already taken care of this matter. But there are too many good WordPress themes out there (and some not so good ones too). I just can’t make my mind about it. I’d rather have a minimalistic theme here, but I can never find one that is minimalistic enough, if you know what I mean. So I may end up getting an entirely different thing if I lose my patience.

Why don't you post some quotes as fillers?

Monday, September 17th, 2007

That would be great: I could post some quotes here everyday, so this blog would look active. But I’m just too lazy to go searching for quotes right now. Yes, it means that “Quotes” category won’t be put to use yet. I might remove it altogether, but I won’t be doing that either. You never know… I might change my mind and turn this into a quotes-only blog.

Do you actually know what to do with this blog?

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Of course not. Isn’t it obvious? But I’ve been putting some serious thinking on it. Pity I still haven’t come to any conclusions.

Why were you so happy yesterday?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Because I had managed to get two items out of my to-do list. And no, I wasn’t cheating. I finished both activities indeed. I was, and I still am, very glad at myself.

All in all it was a very productive day and I even took the time to do things that I needed but hadn’t planned to.

Are you organised?

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Yes and no. I’ve been repeatedly thought to be quite methodical, and I can’t deny I am indeed. But a methodical person can make use of disorganised methods to keep things (rather) organised, and that seems to be my case.

Makes sense?

I knew it didn’t.

Where are your Quotes of the Month?

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Last year I thought about starting a “Quotes of the Month” section here. If you look at my sidebar, you’ll even spot a Quotes category. However, I’ve only posted one, and no more than one set of quotes. I simply forgot to go on with that little plan. I may resume it one of these days.

Do you like The Simpsons?

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Yes, I do. I cannot say I’m the greatest Simpsons fan of all time, but I do enjoy the series. Nowadays it isn’t as funny as it once has been, yet it’s a very entertaining TV show. The episode set in my hometown was lamentable though. No, I’m not being biased here. That wasn’t the first episode to disappoint me anyway. For instance, I didn’t like their travel to Australia, and I’m not an Aussie. Sometimes the series’ staff doesn’t seem to be able to notice the difference between making jokes and being pointlessly aggressive (and inaccurate).

Are you a feminist?

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Yes, yes and yes. I am a feminist. I have always been one. I have been raised by a strongly-willed woman, and have ever wanted to follow her example. Despite some sexist influences, I realised early in life that women don’t have to be fluffy, silly and merely decorative beings.
