No advantage to using tags for any search engines
November 5th, 2007Now WordPress.com offers a tag system, besides its traditional Categories. I took a look at their tag related FAQ and, much to my surprise, I found this item:
Is there any advantage to using tags or categories or both?
Not here at WordPress.com and not for any search engines, no.
Now what about all those bloggers, webmasters, SEOs, online marketers etc. who have always emphasised the importance of using tags?
Of course, I may have misunderstood that sentence. Maybe it means that it’s unimportant only as far as blogs hosted on WordPress.com are concerned. But I’m intrigued by it. And it immediately reminded of a post I found on DailyBlogTips. It was about the famous Technorati tags and how necessary they are… or not.
I don’t know what to think.
People who were trying to include tagging in their search engine optimization should know that they don’t need to alter their web design. The web hosting should be chosen carefully now.
