I rarely use the words “scarce” and “scarcely”. I tend to use synonyms such as “barely”, “hardly” and “just”. “Hardly” is the least used in my list, especially when it stands for “just”. But I like the phrase “can’t hardly wait”, which includes that word. In this case it looks more natural to me because it’s part of an expression.
